Speech 6 - Launch of the revamped "Spa Country Around and About" (2003)

LAUNCH OF THE REVAMPED   “SPA COUNTRY AROUND AND ABOUT” (Speech written and delivered by Warren Maloney, as Mayor, on Monday, 2 nd June 2003 to the Tourist Operators at the Daylesford Visitor information Centre)     My friends and neighbours,   Advertising publishing is as hard as it gets in both the advertising and the publishing industries. There is no easy 10% off the top as with an advertising agency. There is no “publish and be damned” reversion as with the crusading publishers.   Advertising publishers put their precious parts on the butcher’s table with each issue, combining subservience vs inspiration with their advertisers, at the same time as attempting to provide “niche-driven” food thought to a readership that generally finds it difficult to read past 10 lines.   And when you do get it right, your closest supporters follow their words of congratulation usually within a period of 1 year with lines like “Have you thought about a different layout?” or “H

A good community is judged by the willingness of its people to care, to help, to advocate and to participate. A very good community is judged by its eagernerness to facilitate the work of its people, to listen to their concerns and to recognise & provide the resources needed to continue their work. I want to say on behalf of your partners, your families, your NEIGHBOURS, and friends, and on behalf of so many people that you have helped – thank you. We hope that this unique centenary medal is one way of the communit

Speech 4 - "The Fourth Pillar" (2003)

THE FOURTH PILLAR   (Speech written and delivered by Warren Maloney, as Mayor, on Wednesday, 21 st May 2003 to the Second Arts & Culture Forum for the Hepburn Shire at the Daylesford Town Hall)   My friends and neighbours, share with me these moments.   Sit with me at lavandula in the late summer evening listening to a choir of 20 or more as they interpret scottish folk songs – we can close our eyes and understand the bard’s eagerness for common folk to laugh and sing together. look with me at IMPRESSIONS AT a formerly blank canvas upon which has been created the image of a fierce country cricket match outside the guildford general store – we can feel the intensity of the pursuit of the second last wicket walk with me through bellinzona through endless rooms of a MUCH-LOVED guesthouse, SMELLING, LOOKING, smiling at table after table, installation after installation, creativity after creativity of flowers, branches, settings, reflections – we can muse together about

Short Story 4 - "You are all Urgers!" (Roy Richard Maloney 1908-1984)

Image
1908-1984: “You are all Urgers!” [1]   Roy Richard Maloney was born in 1908. In so many ways Roy never grew up and was still a child when he died in 1984.   Roy, the second of six, was the handsome one, a fact and an asset that went to his head early and meant that his World would always revolve around his needs, his thoughts, and his views. Roy, aged 21 years   238 Lygon Street Carlton was a household where the males were revered and treated as little Princes. Granny Barker was the Queen Mother, and she ensured, perhaps even decreed, that, despite the household income coming mainly from the labours of the Aunts and the contributions of the paying Lodgers, despite the difficulties of Wartime, the boys were to get whatever meal they wanted and however they wanted it.   From an early age, Roy wanted a breakfast of two fried eggs served on a large plate. He would stand above the plate and sprinkle salt snow-like from the height of his shoulder before agreeing to sit and eat. Roy
